Position Description and Qualifications: The Bannerman Community League is presently seeking a newsletter editor to join its executive committee. This is an ongoing volunteer role, responsible for the preparation, publication and distribution of our monthly Bannerman community newsletter to an estimated readership of 1100 households.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintain an editorial calendar and curate seasonal/topical stories
  • Research local stories and topics of interest to Bannerman residents and craft articles accordingly
  • Collect submissions (articles, advertisements and notices) from members of the executive and community at large
  • Edit submissions for correct spelling, grammar and punctuationEnsure that content aligns with the executive and Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues’ mission and vision of promoting safe, vibrant communities within the City of Edmonton
  • Sit as an active member of the Bannerman Community League executive and provide event/communication support as required
  • Liaise between the executive committee, residents of the Bannerman community and other stakeholder groups (e.g., City of Edmonton, community agencies and organizations, faith institutions) as appropriate
  • Coordinate advertising with those interested and liaise with Treasurer to ensure advertisers are billed appropriately
  • Coordinate with local printing company to ensure timely printing of press-ready artwork
  • Coordinate with local newsletter carriers to ensure timely delivery of the newsletter to Bannerman households; liaise with Treasurer to ensure carriers are paid in a timely fashion

Desired skills and abilities:

  • To be successful in this role, the editor must possess:
  • Excellent command of English, including correct spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Strong copywriting skills: you may be expected to craft content
  • Previous editorial experience
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines
  • Knowledge of print industry standards
  • Proficiency in such programs as Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat and Adobe InDesign

The following are definite assets:

  • Knowledge of Canadian Press standards
  • Photo editing skills and ability to modify vector graphics
  • Ability to identify and procure royalty-free stock imagery
  • Knowledge of copyright law, privacy legislation and model releases
  • Ability to create press-ready artwork and layouts, including advertisements, from scratch

How to apply: This role requires a time commitment of between eight and 12 hours per month and would be ideal for someone with a public relations, communications or strong graphic design background.
