Tammy Vineberg, APR

This year is bringing many changes locally and around the world. There will be a federal and municipal election and we will have a new prime minister. Donald Trump will be keeping everyone on their toes as he returns as president of the United States. Our economy is in question with the impending tariffs. It’s more important than ever as public relations professionals that we keep our pulse on the news.
However, media sources are dwindling because news outlets are slashing their budgets. At the same time, misinformation, disinformation and artificial intelligence create extra challenges for those of us who value accuracy and timeliness. It’s also critical we stay current with the trends.
We must take a closer look at our competencies to see where we need to improve our skills. I’m a strong believer in continuing education and I’m always looking for professional development opportunities. If you are a CPRS member, I encourage you to see what chapters are offering webinars. Recently, I took part in the CPRS Victoria session “World at Your Door” with Cheryl Major. It examined how the Victoria Police Service handled ongoing protests in the city. Victoria will be offering another virtual lunch and learn session “When to Turn Off the Conversation,” on March 5, with Sheldon Johnson, director of communications and engagement, City of Victoria. Registration details will be announced soon.
The theme for this year’s CPRS National Conference Elevate is spot on: Building Trust in a Shifting World. Although speakers have not been announced yet, early bird registration runs until April. I encourage you to join me in Banff from May 25-27. The conference is an opportunity to expand your knowledge of relevant topics and build your professional support network.
In the meantime, I hope you will join me at one of our monthly Communications Coffee Chats and reach out if you have a suggestion for a professional development session our local CPRS chapter can host. Also, please watch cprsedmonton.ca and social media for information about the Speed Mentoring Session we are offering, on March 19, at MKT on Gateway Blvd. This will be a unique opportunity to get career advice from leading industry professionals and network with other communications students and professionals.
