As we settle into fall, I want to take a moment to talk about something that’s been top of mind for our board: the cost of hosting events—and how we’re working to balance value with affordability for our members.
Like many organizations, CPRS Edmonton is feeling the impact of rising costs. Inflation has driven up prices for venue rentals, catering, and even basic supplies. At the same time, we know that many of our members are navigating a challenging economic climate, with unemployment rates in Alberta and Canada reaching concerning levels. We see you, and we’re listening.
Our commitment is to be fiscally responsible while still delivering experiences that are worthy of your time and investment. That means making thoughtful choices—negotiating with vendors, exploring partnerships, and prioritizing events that offer high-impact learning and networking. We’re also looking at creative ways to stretch our budget, such as hosting events in community spaces, offering virtual options, and tapping into the incredible talent within our own membership.
We believe professional development shouldn’t be a luxury. It should be accessible, relevant, and enriching. Whether you’re a student, a seasoned communicator, or somewhere in between, our goal is to ensure that CPRS Edmonton continues to be a place where you can grow, connect, and thrive—without financial barriers.
As we plan our fall programming, we welcome your feedback. Although we did send a survey to ask about professional development for 2025-26, we are continually wanting to know how best to meet your needs. What types of events are most valuable to you? What formats work best for your schedule and budget? Your input helps us make decisions that reflect the needs of our diverse membership.
Speaking of events, we have our fall mixer coming up on Thursday, September 25 at Frank’s Pub. Tickets are on sale now.
Thank you for being part of this community. Together, we can navigate these challenges with creativity, compassion, and a shared commitment to excellence in our profession.
