A Note From Lyn Brown, President-Elect of CPRS Edmonton

Hello all. First, a big thanks to Crystal Wood, our programming chair, and the 40+ members and friends who joined us at the fall mixer at the Oliver Square Brewsters in late September. It was terrific to see some familiar faces and to meet students and others who are new to our chapter.

Also, a big thanks to my fellow board members and special appreciation to Sharon Sush, CPA, CMA who is volunteering her expertise as our treasurer.

As your acting president this year, I’m keenly aware that we’re in a time of transition and that approaching things differently is both necessary and an opportunity. Coming off the intensity of preparing for and hosting national conference in June, the board took a breather over the summer and are now back at it with a focus on three simple priorities for 2019-20:

1) fun events that connect us as a community;

2) a deeper dive into what CPRS Edmonton’s purpose is in the life of busy members; and

3) targeted outreach with potential local partner groups.

That doesn’t mean we’ll stop offering a solid fare of PD programming, but the volume and variety of online and other learning opportunities means we need to take a strategic look at how to engage with and build our community of practice locally.

Despite the thrill of discovering and incorporating new digital/social platforms and technologies into our work and life, there is also great value in human connection in physical space and time.

I hope you will think of CPRS Edmonton as your go-to community of peers where you renew old friendships, meet new colleagues, mine professional wisdom, and explore ideas and factors that are shaping the relevance and future of public relations and our chapter.

Cheers,
Lyn!
